Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings came out in 1999 from Ensemble Studios, and with its expansion The Conquerors (2000) it became THE medieval RTS. Thirteen civilizations at launch —Britons, Byzantines, Celts, Vikings, Mongols, Japanese, Persians and more—, four ages to climb through (Dark, Feudal, Castle, Imperial), unique units for each civ, Wonders to win the match, and a map editor that is still keeping mods alive 25 years later. The original 2D version with hand-drawn sprites is the one purists never let go.

On Old Servers you get Age of Empires II inside the Private Network, running 24/7 and free.
