Race Driver: GRID, released in 2008 by Codemasters on the EGO engine, was a real shift for racing games: the perfect blend of arcade and simulation, with touring cars, muscle cars, demolition derbies and epic Le Mans 24 Hours races. The Flashback system let you rewind the last few seconds of a run when you messed up — a mechanic every racer copied later — with a real-time visible damage model and cinematic presentation packed with sponsors, teams, team radio and trackside scenery that gave it proper circuit-racing flavor.
