Heretic, released in 1994 by Raven Software on a modified Doom engine, was the first FPS to mix high fantasy with gore and hidden mechanics. You're Corvus, a Sidhe elf crossing dimensions to hunt down D'Sparil and his three Serpent Riders. Magical weapons instead of the usual kit: Staff, Ethereal Crossbow, Dragon Claw, Hellstaff, Phoenix Rod, Firemace. An inventory system (an absolute novelty for FPS games at the time) with tomes of power, morphs, mystic urns and chaos devices, plus a dark gothic/medieval atmosphere Doom didn't have. The spiritual father of Hexen.
