Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, released in 2003 by Splash Damage (originally planned as RTCW's multiplayer expansion, then launched for free when the plans changed), is still the best team-based FPS ever made for a lot of players. id Tech 3 engine, five classes with unique skills and in-match progression (Soldier with panzerfaust and MG42, Medic with medkits, Engineer with dynamite and landmines, Field Ops with airstrikes, Covert Ops with disguise and sniper), asymmetrical objectives (Allies attack, Axis defend), iconic maps (Gold Rush, Radar, Oasis, Fuel Dump, Siwa Oasis) and a competitive scene that lasted more than a decade. And it was free from day one.
