Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, released in 2007 by Infinity Ward, broke the mold by pulling shooters out of WWII and dropping us into modern combat. IW3.0 engine, genre-changing killstreaks (UAV, airstrike, helicopter), a perk system made for every build (Martyrdom, Last Stand, Juggernaut, Steady Aim), and a campaign with "All Ghillied Up" that's still required reading for stealth in FPS. Multiplayer maps people still know by heart: Crash, Shipment, Backlot, Ambush, Crossfire, Vacant, Strike.
