Duke Nukem 3D, released in 1996 by 3D Realms on the Build engine, was the FPS that brought personality to the genre. Duke and his unforgettable one-liners ("Hail to the King, baby", "Come get some", "I'm gonna rip off your head and shit down your neck"), map interactivity like nothing else at the time (playable pool tables, strippers, working bathrooms, ATMs, security cameras), creative weapons (Shrinker, Freezethrower, Pipe Bombs, Laser Tripwires, Devastator), and a very 90s sense of humor that didn't exactly age cleanly but still gets a laugh. Jetpacks, underwater diving, and kicks that sent enemies flying.
