Doom 3, released in 2004 by id Software, was a full reboot of the original Doom with a survival-horror approach. The id Tech 4 engine brought per-pixel dynamic lighting (the first time anything like that had been seen), stencil shadows, and that brilliant/questionable decision of not letting you use the flashlight and a weapon at the same time, which set the whole horror tone. Set in the UAC Mars Research Facility after the portal incident, with audio diary logs scattered across the map, constant jumpscares, and a final Cyberdemon that still holds up.
