It's the Source engine — a monster that introduced advanced facial animation, Havok-powered physics (the legendary Gravity Gun), and streaming loading without hard loading screens — Gordon Freeman waking up 20 years later in City 17, Alyx Vance as the best NPC companion ever written for an FPS, and gameplay pacing that jumps between shooting, puzzles, driving and horror with clockwork precision.
