RISE OF NATIONS
> How to play Rise of Nations online in 2026
Rise of Nations, released in 2003 by Big Huge Games (founded by Brian Reynolds, former Civilization II lead), blends RTS with 4X elements in a way nobody else quite nailed. Matches span 8 historical ages (Ancient, Classical, Medieval, Gunpowder, Enlightenment, Industrial, Modern, Information), 18 civilizations with unique units, real territorial borders (your culture expands the map), wonders with global effects, six resource types (food, timber, metal, oil, knowledge, wealth), and an Attrition mechanic that makes invasions far from your empire hurt. The Thrones and Patriots expansion (2004) added 6 civs and government systems.
On Old Servers you get Rise of Nations + Thrones and Patriots inside the Private Network, free. Grab the Launcher from our Discord and jump into multiplayer 1v1, 2v2, FFA and big team games — some go 3 hours deep in campaigns like Napoleon or Alexander. No GameSpy (official matchmaking went down a decade ago); here, it works. Perfect if you love deep strategy and don't flinch at a long match full of diplomacy, economy, and a tech climb from stone tools to nukes.
