Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, released in 2002 by Croteam on its Serious Engine (the foundation stone for all of Serious Sam), is the FPS that laughed at modern shooters' serious storytelling and went straight back to the pure roots: you alone against endless hordes of enemies on giant maps. Sam "Serious" Stone travels through Egypt, Mesopotamia, Mexico and Aztec temples with a ridiculous arsenal (Serious Bomb, Chainsaw, Sniper, Flamethrower, Minigun, Rocket Launcher, Cannon). Galloping Kleer skeletons, Harpies, Gnaar cyclopes, screaming headless Kamikazes, and bosses the size of buildings. Co-op for up to 16 players; that was the magic number.
